Five alternative hot drinks to keep you warm this winter | Lizi’s

Posted: 14 December 2020

Is your classic Americano becoming a little bit predictable? Want to swap out your English Breakfast tea for something a little more exciting? We’ve got exactly the inspiration you need to use this winter as the perfect opportunity to delve into hot drinks that leave you feeling a whole lot better.

Five alternative hot drinks to keep you warm this winter | Lizi’s

Spicy Chai tea

With flavours of cinnamon, clove and ginger, spicy Chai tea started in India and is a method that has been passed down through generations of mothers and daughters.

Unlike other tea, traditional Spicy Chai is brewed with both warm water and warm milk, and is sweetened depending on the taste preferences of the person enjoying it.

Cinnamon has been shown in numerous studies to lower blood pressure and in some people, it can also reduce the total levels of LDL (the ‘bad’) cholesterol.

Tasty, and with great health benefits; what’s not to love?

Mushroom coffee

Mushroom coffee is regular coffee, with dried, powdered mushroom mixed in.

It tastes pretty similar to regular coffee, and people have attributed it to providing better sleep, reduced stress, higher energy levels.

It’s also thought to reduce inflammation, support memory and boost the immune system. If so, then a mug of this could help you feel a whole lot better in more ways than one.

Because mushroom coffee has less caffeine, it can help with relaxation, and may be a good choice if you enjoy a coffee after dinner but are not so keen on the caffeine hit!

Golden milk

Another alternative hot drink that hails from beautiful India. Made with non-dairy milk, golden milk consists of warming the milk with turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, and other spices.

The inclusion of these spices and their associated health benefits means that golden milk could help boost the immune system, aid digestion, support brain function and improve your mood, among others.

By using a tasty non-dairy milk, like coconut or almond, and experimenting with quantities of spices, you could discover a new favourite when you add golden milk to your hot drink repertoire.

Hot mint and lemon water

This one’s super straightforward to make, and the benefits are ten-fold. Simply add mint leaves and lemon slices to a large mug and add boiling water and – voila!

Not only will this drink hydrate you more than other options, the inclusion of lemon will also offer a Vitamin C boost. Vitamin C has been proved to improve skin quality and helps lower blood pressure.

Not only that, but the combination of mint and lemon can also help keep your breath fresh without having to reach for mints on the regular – a perfect natural breath freshener!

Mulled wine or cider

Now, we couldn’t put together a list of hot drinks for winter without the inclusion of these favourites!

Mulled wine has long been a staple during Christmas shopping and festive celebrations, but more recently mulled cider has appeared on the scene to offer a different, but just as enjoyable, alternative.

Both mulled wine and mulled cider are warmed up with spices and citrus fruit, which ignite the senses and offer a great alternative to standard wine or cider options.

Perfect for an evening around a fire or patio heater to relax and unwind whilst staying warm!
